Scientific American: How Do You Distinguish Between Religious Fervor and Mental Illness?
by AndersonsInfo inhttps://blogs.scientificamerican.com/mind-guest-blog/how-do-you-distinguish-between-religious-fervor-and-mental-illness/.
how do you distinguish between religious fervor and mental illness?.
it's not meant as insult to believers; the two states of mind can share many similar characteristics.

Do they still do the Written Review?
by Funchback ini left in 2006. i seem to vaguely recall that the written review was no more but i can't say for sure.. so, do they still do it?
was (is) it a waste of time?
i used to hate it..

I always hated the written review. To me it was another test and I was horrible at taking tests. I seem to remember back in the 60's we would hand the review to the person behind us to grade our paper as we went over the questions. I always felt guilty because I never knew the answers. My parents would get so upset with me. Still Totally ADD

I feel really, really sorry for those born into the Jehovah's Witness religion
by jambon1 insome facts that make the difference between you and me:.
1 - as a person raised by non jw family, my parents have never loved me based on conditions set out by a group of old men who they don't even know.
how does it feel to know that you are in the unique situation where your parents brought you into the world and said 'i'll show love to you.

The Great Watchtower Guilt Trip
by pale.emperor inas im sure almost all of us on here are ex-jw, we all know first hand how well the watchtower used the power of guilt to manipulate our thoughts and actions for the entire time we were active witnesses.
guilty for not going on the ministry enough.. guilty for not trying harder while on the ministry.. guilty for not turning up for hall cleaning that time.. guilty for saying a swearword.. guilty for looking at a porno mag.. guilty for masturbating through my teens (i thought i was the only one who did!).
guilty for thinking the gb is wrong on a certain thing.. guilty for touching my girlfriend there... even though we've been dating for 3 freakin years and not had sex (thats not natural imo).. guilty for not following along in the watchtower magazine on sunday.. guilty for not studying.. guilty for nodding off during the 8 hour convention.. guilty for my mind wandering during the talks.. guilty for thinking of sister so-and-so.. the list goes on.

Many years ago when I was a elder a CO told me you can not trust the friends to do what's right. This is why we have so many rules. Guilt is a very powerful tool. Still Totally ADD

Another "pull the football away just before you can kick it" comment made by Circuit Assembly's special guest, Thomas Chicky
by sir82 ini started a thread on this guy's comments about building kingdom halls here.. the guy also said this (again, not a word for word quote, but the gist of his comments):.
"the primary hope of salvation is the resurrection.
jehovah does not promise anyone that he will survive armageddon.

Just a little side note Tom Chicky was the one who encouraged me to get badtised back in 1970. I was 16 years old and he told me the only way I could handle microphones. After all the big A was coming. He left for bethel a few months later. His mother made my wife's wedding dress in 1974. When I started to wake up I ran into him at the wt farm. At any rate I think the wt is on to something. A new way of stringing the members on to their natural death. Still Totally ADD

The WTBTS exposes itself about shunning!
by The Searcher in"does religious conversion dishonor family traditions or customs?
this need not be the case.
the bible encourages respect for all, regardless of their religion.

Mind do. The wt idea of honor is if the parents get sick or whatever then they come in to help them. Otherwise they shun you. Still Totally ADD

Have you ever known a holocaust denier? How did you feel about them?
by Esse quam videri ini sometimes did work for a lovely old couple who at times needed repairs done around their home.
my wife and myself spent time with them, having tea and crackers from time to time.
one day the husband and myself got into a conversation and he clearly showed himself to be a holocaust denier.

Those of the John Birch Society believe there was no Holocaust. There movement is growing in numbers in the south east of the US. Still Totally ADD

You're welcome ...
by Simon ini figured i'd shut the site down for a couple of hours to encourage everyone to do their xmas shopping.
the error message was a subtle hint, that's what "500 error" means ... go shopping.. whatever rumours you hear, it definitely wasn't that someone deployed a quick update before going on a 1.5 hour car ride to pick someone up and didn't think that the page they tested, to check it was all working after the update, happened to be cached.
no siree bob, not that, na hah.. anyway, you're welcome for the extra chance to, erm, shop..

Why Jehovah's Witnesses are WRONG about Christmas
by David_Jay inas you know (and are probably tired of hearing me repeat), i’m jewish.
yes, i was a jehovah’s witness when i was a teenager and into my 20s, but returned to my roots and now celebrate chanukah when the holiday season comes around each year.. so why am i writing about christmas?
well, that’s because i thought i would share something about how jehovah’s witnesses teach against christmas.

If there was a verse in the Bible that said the GB was born from God all JW would be celebrating it for a week. No matter how pagan it all was when it first started. It is all about them and nothing else. Still Totally ADD
